"What a crowd, what a turnout." Image: JIM WATSON/AFP/Getty Images After all these months it's still unclear whether or not Donald Trump knows he's not on reality television. Since his inauguration the man has made his obsession with ratings and crowd size very clear, and on Tuesday when he visited Texas for a briefing on Tropical Storm Harvey relief efforts, he just couldn't help himself from celebrating the really great press that came out of the storm. Image: NICHOLAS KAMM/AFP/Getty Images At this point, pretty much only the sun can outshine the Obamas, and they've figured out a brilliant way to use that to their advantage. The former POTUS and FLOTUS moved their eldest daughter Malia into her Harvard University dorm while the sun and the moon were doing their very special dance on Monday.   Malia, who took a gap year last year and worked for The Weinstein Company, is an incoming freshman at the university. She got some help from her famous parents moving into her new digs.  They've done their best to protect their [...]

Internet sleuths are questioning claims that Joel Osteen’s megachurch is too flooded for Harvey relief

Officials for the mega-church won't prove it's flooded. Image: wikimedia commons/tobedaniel Lakewood Church, the Houston arena-cum-megachurch home of celebrity preacher Joel Osteen, would seem a natural place to house some of the tens of thousands residents driven from their homes by Hurricane Harvey-related flooding this week. As the former home of the Houston Rockets, its 16,000 seats are spacious enough for big crowds. And one would think a religious institution would be inclined to open its doors to the needy in a time like this as others in the area already have. A letter to Peter Corfield, chair of Ludlow Hospital League of Friends, from Ms Ditheridge and chair of the trust Mike Ridley, said: "The presentation of men dressed as female nurses in a highly-sexualised and demeaning way is wrong, very outdated and insulting to the profession." Mr Corfield said the bed-push fundraiser had taken place every summer for decades involving men from the local community and was "light-hearted". He said proceeds from this year's event had been earmarked to provide ECG machines for the outpatients and minor injuries departments at Ludlow.

I did an internet search and once you put the word 'old' in you just get those pictures of older people slumped in chairs. So I thought 'wow, there's a gap worth filling'." Vince Cable: Young ‘shafted’ over Brexit – BBC News

He claimed that austerity measures had largely affected the working population, with pensioners suffering "relatively little" after the financial crisis. Young people, he said, have the added problems of "prohibitive housing costs, growing job insecurity and limited career progression". "The old have comprehensively shafted the young," added Sir Vince. "And the old have had the last word about Brexit, imposing a world view coloured by nostalgia for an imperial past on a younger generation much more comfortable with modern Europe." The newly-elected party leader warned that describing such "masochism" as martyrdom was "dangerous", adding: "We haven't yet heard about 'Brexit [...]

Dogs and cars are making it through the hurricane. Image: DARREN ABATE/EPA-EFE/REX/Shutterstock A dog named Otis wasn't about to go hungry during Hurricane Harvey.  As the hurricane made landfall, a dog was spotted wandering around Sinton, Texas carrying a full bag of dog food.  The German shepherd mix wasn't a stray—he just got loose from a screen porch.  "I kept yelling his name and yelling his name and he wasn't around," his caretaker Salvador Segovia told the Houston Chronicle.  The dog belongs to Segovia's 5-year-old grandson, who had evacuated in anticipation of flooding. Otis is well-known in the town of [...]
