The charity warns that inactivity increases the risk of heart disease and costs the NHS around 1.2bn each year. Harriet Mulvaney experienced a heart attack at 44 and decided to make changes to her lifestyle. "Looking back on it now I would say I was very inactive. I thought I was active but actually [...]

There will be 980m for extra school places, including an expansion in selective schools. Speaking last week, the education secretary promised a "new model" for grammars and said local communities would have a "choice over how selection works". There will be 1.4bn to improve the condition of schools, with 1,500 school building projects to be funded. But a recent report from the National Audit Office said that it would cost 6.7bn to get all schools in England into an acceptable state of repair. Last week the public accounts committee published a hard-hitting report accusing the Department for Education of failing [...]

Media playback is unsupported on your device Media captionBrandon Lewis said there was no end in sight for many on bail A 28-day limit on police bail has come into force in England and Wales. The move follows criticism of the use of police bail during Operation Yewtree - into historical sexual abuse - and other high-profile investigations. The then Home Secretary Theresa May ordered a review of its use in 2014. But professional body the College of Policing has criticised the change - saying it could lead to suspects being under investigation by one force without others knowing. 'End [...]

Sci-fi forest tracks carbon impact – BBC News

Carbon locked up The role of plants in taking up CO2 is one of the known unknowns in climatology. CO2 is a plant fertiliser and researchers think that as levels increase the trees will fix more of it into their trunks, roots and organic matter in the earth. But they believe the fertilizing effect will be limited over time by other factors such as lack of nutrients, lack of water and rising temperatures. Humans and forests currently participate in a mutually beneficial exchange in which trees are fed by increasing CO2, and the trees in turn lock up carbon that [...]

Lets meet in Pittsburgh on April 11

In preparation for Disrupt New York and our upcoming TC Sessions series on Robotics Matt Burns and I will be heading to Pittsburgh to talk to some startups. We could use some help. Were aiming to be in Pittsburgh on April 11 and we need a spot and potentially a beer sponsor. We prefer neutral spots but we could be convinced if you have a cool meeting space at your accelerator or office. We also need lots and lots of startups, preferably in hardware. Startups will have two minutes to pitch and two minutes of questioning from a set of [...]

Snapchat wins April Fools with its jab at Instagram

Its a filter, rather than a lens, so its something you apply after taking a photo. Snap a photo in Snapchat, then swipe to the side a few times about 10 swipes in, a familiar interface should slide into place. (Bonus points for the little burn implying that the worlds collective mom is one of the only people looking at your photos there.) [hat tip to Owen Williams for noticing this super quick] Read more: https://techcrunch.com/2017/04/01/snapchat-wins-april-fools-with-its-jab-at-instagram/

Cloudera finally ready for the public stage

When I first met Cloudera CEO Tom Reilly in 2015at the Intel Capital Summit, we were about to go on stage for a fireside chat to discuss among other things Intels massive investment in his company. While on stage, the conversation inevitably turned to when the company might go public. As you might expect, he gave me the standard startup CEO answer. While Cloudera was certainly of sufficient size to IPO, they had just raised over a billion dollars and had plenty of cash. He was willing to wait until, in his words, when we feel its the right time. [...]
