Apple’s iPhone 8 Plus battery swelling issues just won’t seem to go away. Following two confirmed reports of iPhone 8 Plus devices bursting open because of swelling batteries in Taiwan and Japan last week, several more incidents have emerged.  Owners of new iPhone 8 Plus devices in Canada, China, Greece, and Hong Kong have also allegedly found their brand new iPhone 8 Plus devices bursting open, likely because of a battery swelling problem. Mashable also received a tip from a reader who claims his new iPhone 8 Plus split open after just a week of use. We also found another […]

With the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, are consumers caught in the middle?

Today’s retail launch of the Apple iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is a crucial test for Apple’s riskiest iPhone strategy. For the first time, Apple introduced its latest iPhone upgrades while simultaneously teasing something better coming soon — what, by Apple’s own admission, is “the future.” SEE ALSO: Here are the first photographer-shot iPhone 8 pictures Apple’s iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are, based on my review and what I’ve seen elsewhere on the web (and even in teardowns), “S” series devices in full-number-update clothing. Except for the glass back, the handsets maintain the iPhone 6 design introduced in 2014. […]

Apple’s new iPhones have fast charging, but it’s not free

The iPhone X supports fast charging. According to Apple’s official specs, it only takes 30 minutes to charge its battery up to 50%. Pretty neat, huh? But there’s a problem, as noticed by Cnet: When you buy an iPhone X — or iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which support the same feature — you don’t get fast charging out of the box. SEE ALSO: Why Apple is risking everything with the iPhone X The fine print regarding fast charging on Apple’s tech specs page for the iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus, says the following: “Testing conducted by Apple […]

Apple fans finally have their hands on the iPhone 8, but two owners in Asia have already busted their new phones under strange circumstances.  An iPhone 8 Plus owner in Taiwan says that her five-day-old 64GB device split open while charging, according to The Next Web. The owner claims she was using the official Apple charging cord, and after about three minutes, the phone started swelling, and she pulled it off the charger.  Another iPhone 8 Plus owner in Japan also claims his phone started splitting open. The weird thing about his story is that he didn’t even have an […]

Apple rolled out iOS 11 on Sept. 19, giving everyone with devices as old as 2013’s iPhone 5S some fancy new features and ramped-up processing speeds.  The OS has been widely adopted as users flock to upgrade for the new features. As of press time, about 23 percent of all Apple devices are now running iOS 11. That’s a great adoption rate for Apple — but for some iPhone owners, cycling up to the new OS hasn’t been an entirely smooth process.  SEE ALSO: iOS 11 review: Great on iPhone, extraordinary on iPad Some of these new users have reported […]

Put it on there.Image: apple The excitement of Tuesday’s Apple Event isn’t limited to the iPhone X.  Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, took the stage to unveil the future of device charging — at least as far as Apple is concerned.  It’s called Airpower, and it’s the company’s first big move toward wireless charging.  SEE ALSO: The Apple Watch Series 3 is here, has cellular connectivity, and is kinda boring “It’s a mat that you place your iPhone 8 or iPhone 10 down and it just starts to charge,” Schiller told the crowd. “You can place your […]

The iPhone X‘s new TrueDepth camera system is rumored to be causing some production delays, but it could give Apple an important edge over its competitors for years to come.  Renown analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities said Apple’s competitors will likely need at least two and a half years to replicate the TrueDepth camera’s functionality and user experience in an investors note obtained by MacRumors. The system is the key to Apple’s new “Face ID” biometric security technology, Animoji, and several other new features. Kuo’s bold predictions come shortly after he watched Apple’s official demonstrations of the camera system, […]

The corkscrew elevator and other secrets of Steve Jobs Theater

Steve Jobs Theater is empty. Hours earlier, the massive lobby, demo area (or foyer) space below, and theater were humming with Apple employees, media, analysts, and invited special guests, all jostling to touch the new iPhone X, iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and Apple Watch Series 3.  SEE ALSO: iPhone X: Hands on with Apple’s stunning new device Now, I stood alone in the vast open space, itself inside Apple Park (Steve Jobs’ version of Disney World), positioning myself dead center under the single-piece 155-foot metallic carbon fiber roof. I felt so small. Then I trotted back to the periphery. The […]

The iPhone X, mystery no more.Image: Raymond Wong/Mashable And then it was real. In a few short moments after the words “one more thing…” appeared on a massive screen during the Sept. 12 Apple keynote, the iPhone X went from a much-rumored tech myth to a real, officially announced product. Soon Apple’s SVP of marketing Phil Schiller was back out to tell us all the new features, from the edge-to-edge “Super Retina” display to wireless charging to the oh-man-it’s-as-much-as-a-MacBook-Air $999 starting price.
