How to kill your marketing and profit from its demise
Times Square at duskImage: Getty Images The authors of “Killing Marketing” say if you don’t evolve, you’ll die “Marketing and innovation produce results,” wrote Peter Drucker, “all the rest are costs.” Sadly, in a world where over half of all digital advertising—an industry expected to hit $75.6 billion by the close of 2017—won’t be seen by an actual human… that assessment no longer stands. At least not when it comes to marketing. The symptoms are everywhere. Ad blockers, fake traffic, and bots (oh my). Toss in plummeting consumer trust and the skyrocketing cost of getting your message seen and, apologies […]

This weatherman’s reaction to the solar eclipse is the sweetest thing you’ll see all day

Netflix’s 5 most expensive shows (so far)
Image: netflix A lot of noise has been made about how much Netflix is spending in order to attract new subscribers and expand into new regions of the world. A Los Angeles Times report titled “Netflix is $20 billion in debt” renewed worries that the company was pushing too hard, too fast. First of all, that’s technically wrong, as Netflix has some debt but is mostly tied up with deals to pay for non-original TV shows. Secondly, that spending is part of a plan that, if successful, will make Netflix a major media power for decades to come. SEE ALSO: […]
All the best things on the internet are terrible at making money
Image: Shutterstock / Andrey_Popov At some point, the internet became a get-rich-quick scheme. There’s a simple formula to it: Smart people with good ideas receive millions of dollars to build something. If that something generates billions of dollars, it is a success. If it does not, it is a failure. Such “failures” include: Twitter, Soundcloud, Vine, Reddit. At varying times, each of these companies had the hallmarks of “success”millions of engaged users, venture capital money, a good brand. Now, Twitter is limping along, Soundcloud is in a death spiral, Vine is gone, and Reddit is still trying to figure things […]
Snopes, the internets favorite fact checker, is in deep trouble
Snopes is trapped in a complicated legal mess.Image: Saves SNOPES Just as one of the oldest fact-checking sites seems to have hit its mainstream stride, it gets tangled in a dramatic legal mess, one that involves lots of finger-pointing, alleged backstabbing, and a contentious divorce. Its the kind of backroom drama that tends to play out in secret, until someone files a lawsuit. Now we have not one, but two lawsuits, and on Monday, a cry for help. Snopes has launched a crowdfunding campaign to build a war chest. And its growing quickly. It says it needs the money because […]

Netflix just hit 100 million subscribers
Image: Netflix Netflix and 100 mil. The entertainment giant revealed on Monday that it now boasts 104 million subscribers. It’s a milestone that highlights just how big Netflix has grown in the past few years. Much of the growth has come from outside of the U.S., as the company noted. “We also crossed the symbolic milestones of 100m members and more international than domestic members. It was a good quarter,” Netflix said in its investor letter. Netflix continues to resemble an unstoppable force of nature that is impressive even when listed alongside rivals like Facebook and Google. Only Amazon rivals […]
